Nama Ar-Rum berarti Bangsa Romawi atau Bizantium. Dinamakan demikian karena pada awal surat ini, yakni ayat 2-4, terdapat ramalan Al-Quran tentang kekalahan yang berlanjut dengan kebangkitan bangsa Romawi. Selain membahas tentang bangsa Romawi, surat Ar Rum juga membahas soal pernikahan, yakni pada ayat ke-21, yang bunyinya: Quran 3:21 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn.
